We buy it, ride it, and put it through real-world miles before we tell you whether it’s worth your money.

Product Reviews

Most “reviews” online are spec sheets with affiliate links bolted on. Ours aren’t. Every ScooterMcGoo review starts the same way: we get our hands on the actual product, charge it up, and ride it the way you would. Then we tell you the truth, the good and the annoying.

How we review

Our process is simple and stubbornly consistent so you can compare one ride to the next. Here’s what every review goes through before it earns a rating:

  • Unbox and set up — we time the assembly and note anything confusing, because a great scooter that takes an hour to put together still loses points.
  • Range and battery — we ride until it dies, on real streets and real hills, then compare that to the manufacturer’s claimed range (which is almost always optimistic).
  • Speed and acceleration — measured, not guessed, on a level stretch.
  • Ride quality — suspension, deck feel, braking, and how it handles cracks, gravel, and curbs.
  • Build and durability — we look at the welds, folding mechanisms, tires, and where corners were cut.
  • Value — what you actually get for the price versus the competition.

Each ride gets scored on those criteria, and the final rating is the honest sum of them, not a number we picked to make a brand happy.

What we test

We cover the full range of personal electric mobility: electric scooters, skateboards, longboards, electric unicycles, one-wheels, and mopeds. We test commuter rides, all-terrain machines, budget picks, and premium flagships. We pay special attention to rides for kids, where safety, weight limits, and speed governors matter far more than top-end specs.

Real miles, not lab numbers

We don’t trust a spec sheet to tell us how far a scooter goes or how a board feels at speed. A 25-mile claimed range often means 16 real miles once you add a rider, some hills, and a little wind. We report what we actually measured so you’re not surprised on day one.

Why our reviews are different

Three things set our reviews apart:

  • We ride it before we rank it. No product makes our recommended list on specs alone. If we haven’t ridden it, we don’t rank it.
  • We say what’s wrong. Every ride has trade-offs. A glowing review with zero downsides is a sales pitch, not a review. We tell you what annoyed us so you can decide if it’s a dealbreaker.
  • We’re friendly experts, not hype machines. We’ve logged thousands of miles across every category, so we can tell you whether a feature actually matters or is just marketing.

Yes, we earn a commission when you buy through our links. That never changes our scores. The honest take is the whole point of the site, so we protect it.

Frequently asked questions

Do you actually test the products you review?

Yes. Every review on ScooterMcGoo is based on a ride we personally tested, including range, speed, braking, and build quality. If we haven’t ridden it, we don’t rank it.

Do affiliate commissions affect your ratings?

No. We earn a commission when you buy through our links, but that never changes a score. Our ratings come straight from the testing process, downsides and all.

How do you measure range and speed?

We ride each product until the battery dies on real streets and hills, then compare that to the manufacturer’s claimed range. Speed and acceleration are measured on a level stretch, not estimated from the spec sheet.

Where should I start if I don’t know what to buy?

Start with our buying guide, which sorts rides by use case, budget, and rider. Shopping for a younger rider? Our best electric scooters for kids roundup is the most-read place to begin.
